Transforming claims through technology

Next up in our Employee Spotlight Series is Pedro Bernardo, a key member of our Data Science team.

After 4 years with Sprout.ai, Pedro’s journey is a great example of how purpose driven technology, collaborative culture, and continuous learning can contribute towards personal and professional growth.

Solving a real problem and working with top talent

Pedro’s decision to join Sprout.ai was guided by a belief in our mission to make every claim better, for both insurers, policyholders and the possibility of doing this through the practical application of technology.

“The first thing that attracted me was the problem we’re solving, it’s real, and the tech we’re developing can actually solve it. I’m very skeptical when it comes to tech that’s all buzzwords and no substance, but with Sprout, I saw something tangible, something meaningful. That made it exciting.”

Pedro was also excited by the opportunity of working with top-tier talent.

“In the interview process, I was told Sprout were hiring people from Kaggle, including grandmasters. That was super exciting, it meant I’d get to work with incredibly smart people.”

Interviews that inspired confidence

Pedro’s decision to join Sprout.ai wasn’t sparked by a typical interview process. Instead, it was the genuine, open conversations and shared excitement around the potential of the solution.

“There wasn’t a typical technical interview, we just discussed the problem, brainstormed, and vibed on the solution. It was refreshing. But the moment I really decided was during my interview with the CEO at the time. He shared his vision for Sprout, and I just knew it was the right place to be.”

Hands-on growth opportunities

For Pedro, joining a startup meant entering a world where learning is continuous and growth comes as a result of doing. Reflecting on his journey, he shared how Sprout has shaped his skillset: 

“You can’t not grow in a startup. There are always challenges, and you just have to get your hands dirty. Whether it’s coding, leading small projects, or trying something completely new, you grow by doing. I’ve developed so many skills just by stepping into roles as needed. The openness here helps a lot, too, everyone from the CEO to junior engineers is open to ideas and collaboration.”

Making an impact on real lives

Pedro’s passion for technology isn’t just about innovating, it’s about the impact that it has to real people and their lives. He’s driven by the knowledge that the work done at Sprout directly improves the claims experience for policyholders.

“I love that I get to work with state-of-the-art AI tech every day. But what really hits home is seeing how our work makes life easier for policyholders. For example, I recently retrained and deployed a new model that increased the number of claims going straight to payment by 4%. That might not sound like a lot, but when you’re processing 100,000+ claims a month, that’s 4,000 people getting their claims paid in minutes instead of a week. That’s the real impact.”

An open, transparent, and collaborative culture

Pedro feels that openness and transparency are central to Sprout.ai’s culture. Although the team is largely remote, they work together seamlessly. 

“From the leadership team to our own data science crew, everyone is open to feedback, and we share information freely. What’s more impressive is how well we collaborate, even though most of our data science team is remote. That’s not easy to pull off, but we do it well.”

What is it like to collaborate with the Sprout.ai team?

“The people here are great. You don’t have that feeling of dread when you log on in the morning. Everyone is smart, supportive, and just really nice to work with. It’s the perfect combo.”

Lessons that stick

Working closely with global insurance clients has taught Pedro one of the most important lessons of his career so far. To be open-minded.

“At Sprout, I’ve learned the importance of being open-minded. Coming from a tech-heavy background, I used to assume certain things were obvious, but when working with clients from different backgrounds, I’ve realised how important it is to communicate clearly and understand different perspectives. It’s a lesson I’ll take with me wherever I go.”
