A Journey from Insurance to InsurTech
We’re kicking off our series with Emily Weager, Engagement & Operations Manager, whose leap from claims handling to AI-driven customer success is everything we love about life at Sprout: fast-paced, purpose-led, and packed with growth.
Having formed the foundations of a career in insurance, Emily joined us as a Claims Automation Analyst, transitioning from an insurance background to the world of technology and bringing with her expertise from the front lines of claims handling.
In her three years with Sprout, she’s had exposure to a whole range of different departments within Sprout, developing a multi-disciplinary skillset and embracing a hybrid role across both Operations and Customer Success. Sprout has fast-tracked her growth with hands-on learning at every turn.
Bridging insurance and technology, with purpose
When first learning about the role at Sprout.ai, Emily was motivated by the opportunity to apply her existing insurance knowledge to the world of AI. She was equally excited by the chance to earn new skills and grow in a completely new industry.
“The opportunity at Sprout immediately stood out; it aligned perfectly with my skill set as a claims handler while also offering a chance to step into technology. The chance to explore a new industry was exciting to me. From my experience as a claims handler, I knew first-hand that the insurance industry needs to evolve to keep up with modern ways of working.”
A transparent and engaging hiring process
The interview process reaffirmed the decision to join Sprout.ai. After meeting with different people across the company, including the CEO, there was a clear view of Sprout.ai’s values and commitment to hiring the right people.
“I got to speak to different people in the business, from Customer Engagement to technical teams, and even had a conversation with our CEO. It was refreshing to see how open the leadership team was and how much effort they put into ensuring Sprout’s values resonated with new joiners.”
Continuous career growth and development
Right from the earliest days of her role at Sprout, Emily has seized a range of growth opportunities which were available to her across the business, supercharging her professional development.
“I’ve had incredible opportunities to grow throughout my time at Sprout, developing lots of new skills, through projects like onboarding new customers, managing live production accounts, and overseeing data security and our ISO 27001 accreditation. I’ve strengthened my problem-solving, strategic thinking, leadership experience, and understanding of information security.”
Beyond hands-on experience, mentorship has played a key role in Emily’s growth.
“Coming in as a non-technical person into an AI business has its challenges, but mentorship from the team has been great. I have a bi-weekly mentoring session with one of our senior engineers, allowing me to deepen my understanding of SaaS and AI products.”
Turning industry pain points into product power
Emily is motivated by working on projects which deliver real-world value; for her one of the most exciting aspects of working at Sprout.ai is seeing first-hand how the technology improves claims processing and enhances customer experiences.
“I’m motivated by delivering positive outcomes for our customers and having a real-world impact. Having been a claims handler, I understand the challenges we’re solving first-hand. Now, I help build a product that makes claims processing faster and more efficient. Knowing that a policyholder can submit a claim and have all evidence processed in under five seconds is incredible.”
A culture of collaboration and growth

“We have a great culture. We work towards the same goals, play to each other’s strengths, and truly value our colleagues. This is evident in our Sproutouts [our peer recognition programme], monthly socials, and the way we support and welcome new team members through onboarding and beyond.”
Lessons learned and advice for new joiners
Emily’s most valuable lesson from working at Sprout.ai? Being able to adapt to new challenges which enables continuous professional development.
“Sprout has taught me the importance of embracing change and seeking better ways to work. Being adaptable is key in a fast-paced, evolving industry like ours.”
For those joining Sprout.ai, Emily has some advice on what she has learnt:
“Don’t let the first few weeks overwhelm you. There’s a lot to take in, and it’s okay not to understand everything immediately, especially coming from a non-technical background. Our work is complex, but our team will help you get there. Once you’re up to speed, don’t let your job description limit you: there’s always room to grow and explore new areas that interest you.”
